Ian Watkins, the disgraced former lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, has been killed in a brutal prison stabbing. The 48-year-old, who has been serving a 35-year sentence for heinous child sex offenses since 2013, was attacked at HMP Wakefield, a high-security facility in West Yorkshire known colloquially as the “Monster Mansion” for housing some of the UK’s most notorious inmates.

The incident unfolded on Saturday morning around 9:39 a.m., when prison staff reported an assault on a prisoner. Watkins was stabbed in the neck by another inmate shortly after inmates were released from their cells for association time. Despite immediate intervention by prison officers and emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Details emerging from sources indicate the weapon was a sharpened toilet brush, with the attack reportedly stemming from a dispute over a drug debt.

West Yorkshire Police have launched a homicide investigation, confirming that two men—a 25-year-old and a 43-year-old—have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are leading the probe, with inquiries ongoing at the prison. A Prison Service spokesperson declined to comment further while the investigation proceeds, citing the sensitivity of the matter.

Watkins’ death marks the second violent incident involving him at HMP Wakefield. In 2023, he was stabbed in a separate attack, suffering non-life-threatening injuries after being taken hostage by three inmates for several hours before officers intervened. Transferred to the Category A prison in 2019, Watkins had previously described his incarceration among “the worst of the worst,” including murderers and serial killers.
