In a nightmarish start to the 2025-26 NHL season, the St. Louis Blues fell flat against the Minnesota Wild, dropping a lopsided 5-0 decision at Enterprise Center on Thursday. The Wild, powered by a dominant performance from goaltender Filip Gustavsson and timely scoring from their top line, handed the Blues their first loss of the year in what was meant to be an electric home opener.
The Blues came out tentative early, generating just eight shots in the first period while Minnesota controlled the pace. The Wild broke the ice late in the frame when Ryan Hartman capitalized on a defensive lapse, roofing a wrist shot unassisted at 15:54 to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, at 17:30, Matt Boldy tipped home a centering feed from Kirill Kaprizov, with Marco Rossi grabbing the secondary assist, sending St. Louis to the locker room down 2-0.
Things only got worse in the middle frame. The Blues killed off early penalties for high-sticking and tripping but couldn’t buy a bounce. Minnesota struck on the power play at 12:27 when Joel Eriksson Ek wristed a shot past Jordan Binnington, assisted by Kaprizov and Boldy, to extend the lead to 3-0. St. Louis’s discipline faltered further with hooking and slashing infractions, and Hartman notched his second of the night—a sharp snap shot off a Yakov Trenin feed—at 17:36, chasing any momentum the Blues might have mustered. Binnington, who faced 18 shots overall, was under siege, finishing with 13 saves and allowing five goals on the night.
The third period offered little relief. Minnesota tacked on insurance at 7:27 courtesy of Rossi’s wrist shot, set up perfectly by Kaprizov and Boldy, sealing the shutout. Gustavsson was stellar in net for the Wild, turning aside all 27 Blues shots (per NHL stats) for his 12th career shutout and a perfect 1.000 save percentage. Minnesota outshot St. Louis 21-27 overall, won 53.7% of faceoffs, and converted 1-of-3 on the power play while staying disciplined with just four penalty minutes.
On the Blues’ side, the offense sputtered with zero goals despite generating more shots, and the penalty kill went 2-for-3 amid six minors. Captain Brayden Schenn and the forwards pressed but couldn’t solve Gustavsson, while the defense leaked chances in transition. “We didn’t execute when it mattered,” Schenn said postgame, echoing the frustration in a quiet locker room.
The loss stings as a tough opener, but with a quick turnaround against the Central Division, the Blues will look to rebound and find their groove. Up next: Hosting the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
