Jaguars Stun Chiefs in Monday Night Thriller: Lawrence’s Miracle TD Seals 31-28 Upset

In a chaotic, back-and-forth battle under the lights of EverBank Stadium, the Jacksonville Jaguars pulled off a stunning 31-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, October 6, 2025. Trevor Lawrence’s improbable 1-yard rushing touchdown with 23 seconds left – after tripping twice in the backfield – capped a wild comeback, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs and propelling Jacksonville to 4-1 on the season.

The Chiefs struck first, building a 14-0 lead in the first half behind Patrick Mahomes’ pinpoint 2-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce and his own 9-yard scrambling score. Kansas City’s offense hummed early, outgaining the Jaguars 137-75 in the opening quarter, but Jacksonville’s nightmarish start included a fumbled snap by Lawrence at the goal line on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, setting the tone for a gritty fightback.

The second half belonged to the Jaguars. Lawrence answered with a 3-yard touchdown toss to Parker Washington late in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-7. He then tied it at 14-14 early in the third with a 10-yard scramble, highlighted by a 44-yard bomb to rookie sensation Travis Hunter, who juked defenders for one of the longest rookie receptions of the season.

The turning point came late in the third when Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd snared a Mahomes pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster at the goal line and rumbled 99 yards for a touchdown – the longest interception return by a linebacker in NFL regular-season history. Lloyd evaded Mahomes himself and got a key block from teammate Josh Hines-Allen to flip the score to 21-14.

Kansas City refused to fade. After an interception by Trent McDuffie off Lawrence (aided by a controversial no-call on pass interference against Parker Washington), Kareem Hunt plunged in from 5 yards to tie it at 21-21. Cam Little’s 52-yard field goal gave Jacksonville a brief 24-21 edge, but Hunt’s 2-yard score with 1:45 left put the Chiefs ahead 28-24.

Enter Lawrence’s magic. On the final drive, he hit Brian Thomas Jr. for 33 yards and Dyami Brown for 13 more, then benefited from a pass interference flag on Chamarri Conner to reach first-and-goal. What followed was pandemonium: Lawrence tripped after his right guard stepped on his foot, fell backward, then scrambled forward, breaking a tackle and diving in for the winner as Chiefs defenders, including Chris Jones, hesitated.

Mahomes’ desperation heave on the last play fell incomplete, sealing Jacksonville’s first win over Kansas City since 2009. Lawrence finished 18-of-25 for 221 yards and a score, plus 54 rushing yards and two TDs, overcoming two turnovers. Mahomes threw for 318 yards with a TD and INT, while Hunt added two rushing scores.

The Jaguars, now tied for first in the AFC South, match their entire 2024 win total and boast the NFL’s top takeaway defense. For the Chiefs (2-3), it’s a sobering reality check after an early-season stumble, exposing special teams woes and defensive lapses despite offensive fireworks. In a league of dynasties, Jacksonville’s resilience roared loudest last night.
