“On The Wire” voices lead vocalist Tema Siegel’s own frustrations during moments of impatience. Pulsing with bright horns and sticky hooks, “On The Wire” takes accountability through honest self-reflection. Lyrically, Siegel shares, “I reflect on how unfair I can be toward the people I love when they do something I dislike—like when my mom offers unsolicited advice or when my bandmates and I clash on creative decisions. Instead of exploding, I tend to grow impatient, take things personally, and prickle—leaving those closest to me feeling like they’re on thin ice.”
Siegel continues, “Only afterward do I realize how unfair I’ve been, and I regret hurting the people who care for me most. Though the lyrics describe being upset with others, the real frustration is with myself. The chorus is me calling myself out for being dramatic and intense.”
Couch’s forthcoming album puts their distinct retro-soul/pop sound–complete with texturally-rich horns and inviting vocals on full display. The band’s signature soundscape is fuller and bigger than ever before with its electric energy, masterful, mostly live instrumentation and raw subject matter that sheds light on the band’s lived experiences. Lead guitarist Zach Blankstein says, “’Big Talk’ is our reflection on multidimensional love–romantic, platonic, self-love—and the kind of bold, honest connection that comes from shedding small talk and saying what you really mean. It’s moody and nostalgic, but also warm and bright—a soundtrack for that phase in life when things start to click, even if everything’s still a little messy.”
“Many of the songs began in our bedrooms or as voice memos and writing sessions between two or three of us, then came to life through a deeply collaborative, full-band process.” The band took the new music on the road to test it across Europe with Cory Wong and as they played some of their biggest U.S. shows to date with Lake Street Dive.
Upbeat and emotionally-charged, the previously shared first taste of the LP, “What Were You Thinking,” tells the story of being 19 and falling for a magnetic, unreliable, older presence–the sting of mixed signals, being discarded and having someone carelessly handle one’s heart. Atwood Magazine, WBUR and Live For Live Music praised the band’s chemistry and the track’s boldness, warmth and explosiveness.
Between 2019 and 2021, high school and college friends Couch began writing and recording remotely as they began to build a following online. Their debut self-titled EP arrived in 2021 as they began playing live shows for the first time on small, self-booked tours. By 2023, they shared their sophomore EP, Sunshower, appeared at Boston Calling and Levitate played a 40 city U.S. headline tour and support dates in Europe. Now, the seven-piece band–Blankstein and Siegel alongside best friends Jared Gozinsky (drums), Will Griffin (bass), Danny Silverston (keys), Jeffrey Pinsker-Smith (trumpet) and Eric Tarlin (saxophone) are thrilled to formally introduce themselves with a body of work that is a potent culmination of Couch today–vibrant, raw, and true to who they are today.
The energetic new single “On The Wire” by Couch is out now. Their splashy debut Big Talk is due out October 24 and is available to pre-save now. Couch began as a tangle of childhood and high school friendships around the Boston area. Over time, those threads pulled tighter, solidifying piece by piece into the lineup that would become Couch.
Now, Couch is releasing its highly-anticipated debut album, Big Talk, a meditation on multidimensional love. The record, out October 24th, expands the band’s creative canvas, blending analog warmth with contemporary production. It’s a swirl of modern pop boldness grounded in vintage instrumentation, interlocking and carefully arranged grooves, live horns, and layered harmonies. In support of Big Talk, Couch is embarking on a 40-city international headline tour, including marquee stops at Roadrunner (Boston), The Fonda (Los Angeles), Brooklyn Steel (New York), and KOKO (London).
Self-produced, self-managed, and deeply collaborative, Couch’s sound is shaped by years of arranging, playing, and building together. Couch is Tema Siegel (lead vocals), Zach Blankstein (guitar), Jared Gozinsky (drums), Will Griffin (bass), Danny Silverston (keys), Jeffrey Pinsker-Smith (trumpet), and Eric Tarlin (saxophone).
