Anze Kopitar, the Los Angeles Kings’ captain and two-time Stanley Cup champion, announced he will retire after the 2025-26 season, his 20th in the NHL. The 38-year-old Slovenian center shared the news at an emotional press conference at Crypto.com Arena.
Drafted 11th overall in 2005, Kopitar spent his entire career with the Kings, amassing over 1,200 points and earning the 2016 Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward. He led the Kings to Cups in 2012 and 2014, becoming a cornerstone of the franchise and the first Slovenian star in the NHL.
Despite a strong 2024-25 season with 70 points, Kopitar cited family time and new opportunities as reasons for his decision. “I’ve given everything to hockey, and it’s time for the next chapter,” he said.
Kopitar’s leadership and durability defined his tenure. As captain since 2016, he mentored young stars and remained a model of consistency. The Kings plan to honor him throughout the season, with his No. 11 jersey set to be retired.
Kopitar may stay involved in hockey through coaching or advisory roles and plans to support the sport’s growth in Slovenia. The 2025-26 season will celebrate a remarkable career for one of the NHL’s greats.
