St. Louis CITY SC is entering a new chapter as the club bids farewell to its inaugural sporting director, Lutz Pfannenstiel. With the MLS Summer Transfer Window now closed, President and General Manager Diego Gigliani, alongside Technical Director John Hackworth, will collaborate with the existing sporting staff to manage roster construction and player contract negotiations while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Lutz Pfannenstiel, a former German goalkeeper and seasoned soccer executive, joined CITY SC in the summer of 2020 as the club’s first-ever sporting director. His impact was profound, shaping the club’s sporting department from the ground up. From establishing the Academy and MLS NEXT Pro programs to overseeing the development of the training center and the first team, Pfannenstiel laid a strong foundation. His vision led to a historic milestone in 2023 when CITY SC became the first MLS expansion team to win its regular-season conference title.

Pfannenstiel’s influence extended beyond results. He instilled core values focused on player development and championed a high-intensity, pressing, team-first style of play that became the club’s identity. His passion for the game and commitment to St. Louis helped integrate the club into the fabric of the community.

Despite these achievements, CITY SC has faced challenges with inconsistent performance over the past two seasons. As the club aims to elevate its on-field success and meet the expectations of its fans and ownership, it has decided to pursue a new direction in sporting leadership. This shift builds on the foundation Pfannenstiel established while addressing the need for greater stability and competitiveness.

“These decisions are never easy,” said Diego Gigliani, CITY SC President and GM. “Lutz’s passion and commitment were integral to our historic first season, and he will always be part of the CITY family. However, as we look to the next five years, we believe a change in sporting leadership will help us achieve our long-term goals for the team and the St. Louis region.”

CEO and ownership group member Carolyn Kindle echoed this sentiment, praising Pfannenstiel’s contributions. “Lutz was one of our most important hires in the early days and deserves so much credit for our early success,” she said. “More than that, he embraced our vision of being more than just a soccer club and connected deeply with the St. Louis community. We can’t thank Lutz and his wife, Amalia, enough for all they’ve done.”

As the search for a new sporting director begins, Gigliani and Hackworth will take on Pfannenstiel’s responsibilities for the remainder of the 2025 season. The club is focused on addressing the steps needed to ensure long-term success on the pitch.

St. Louis CITY SC, currently standing at 5 wins, 16 losses, and 6 draws with 21 points, will return to action against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. Central Time.
