Black Fortune’s profile is rocketing up, and his new single is here to add to the momentum. The DMV native has delivered his new song and music video, “Weight On Me” with Philly producer Swaggyono as he grapples with the transition to success. The exuberant and expressive rapper and OSSH MOB founder is hard at work on his new mixtape alongside Swaggyono, OSSHYONO, and “Weight On Me” kicks off a new era.
Stream the new single here, and watch the official “Weight On Me” video here. OSSHYONO is due August 15.
“I wanted to get it to the point where I’m fully focused on music,” Fortune says about the transition away from situations that inspired his new record and much of OSSHYONO. “But it’s not easy for me to just change my ways because I’ve been living this way all my life. It’s the transformation from me being a street n***a, to a superstar.”
Thus, on “Weight On Me,” Black Fortune expresses the weight of his transition and asking his loved ones to have patience until it’s completed. The official music video mirrors this sentiment, as Fortune finds himself in a myriad of compromising situations, from an argument with a lover to a closed-door police interrogation – ripple effects of the challenging transition he’s undertaken. “Twelve pulled me over and I had weight on me / When shit gets hard babe you can lay on me,” he raps on his new record.
Fortune’s well-stated energy is hard to keep under wraps, and sonically, “Weight On Me” plays as a song that you can ride, party or fall into deep thought to. It depends on the mode you’re in.
OSSHYONO, which draws on the ‘OSSH’ world that Black Fortune has built for his audience, marks Fortune’s first full-length release since 2022’s 444, and his first project since joining Epic Records in 2024.
“OSSHYONO is basically me talking about the things that I’ve been through in my life. My trials and tribulations. Things that I experienced, things that I’ve seen. Things that my friends went through,” Fortune reveals. “The beats are dark, grungy and authentic. They speak for themself. But it’s also fun, fast-paced, and something you can ride to, party to, or catch a vibe to. There’s something on this product for everyone to enjoy.”
Fortune’s paradoxical ability to deliver both enjoyment and catharsis in his music is one of the hallmarks of his early success. With OSSHYONO, he’ll be making a formal reintroduction.
About Black Fortune:
Supercharged with murmuring melodies, sly menace, and dystopian soundscapes, Black Fortune turns street raps into futuristic adventures. Since breaking out with “OsshWop” in 2018, the Landover, Maryland artist has cultivated an expansive fan base with brazen confidence and sticky anthems that are as stylish as they are indelible. Shifting between staccato blockboy couplets and slippery sing-song stanzas, he’s become one of the most inventive creators the DMV has to offer. He only reinforces that reputation with “Forrest Gump,” an ominous theme song fit for a Trap Terminator. “It’s just a more mature version of the songs I was making before,” shares Black, proudly. “It’s the fully unwrapped package of Black Fortune.” That stylistic evolution began with his 2018 project, OsshRock, a melodic effort that announced his presence as an emerging force in the DMV. Its lead single, “OsshWop,” collected tens of millions of streams across DSPs. It also introduced the concept of “Ossh” to the rest of the world. He’d continue spreading that gospel through projects like OsshGod (2020), OsshMob (2021), Sorry for the Ossh (2022) and 444 (2022). There’s a literal and functional purpose for the term, but Black Fortune presents it as a spiritual and metaphorical idea better felt than explained. “It’s a lifestyle — It’s a way of living,” he says. “It’s everything that you want it to be.” Looking ahead, Black plans to make Ossh a language the whole world can feel. More tangibly, he wants hip-hop supremacy. That starts with OSSHYONO. “I had to take some time to study my craft and become a better version of Black Fortune for me and my fans,” he says. “This is the rebirth.”
