On the eve of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Seattle Mariners made a splash by reacquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, a move that brings the fan-favorite “Good Vibes Only” slugger back to Seattle after a two-year stint with the team in 2022 and 2023. The deal, finalized late Wednesday night and pending medical reviews, sends first baseman Tyler Locklear (Mariners’ No. 9 prospect) and relievers Hunter Cranton (No. 16) and Juan Burgos (No. 17) to Arizona in exchange for Suárez, according to multiple sources.

Suárez, 34, is enjoying a career-best season, leading MLB with 87 RBIs and smashing 36 home runs, trailing only Cal Raleigh’s 38. His offensive prowess, including a historic four-homer game against Atlanta in April, makes him a critical addition to a Mariners lineup that has struggled with a .615 OPS since the All-Star break. Despite rookie Ben Williamson’s solid glove at third, his bat couldn’t keep pace, prompting Seattle to upgrade with Suárez’s power and veteran presence.

The trade follows Seattle’s earlier acquisition of first baseman Josh Naylor from Arizona, signaling an aggressive push to bolster the lineup for a playoff run. With Suárez and Raleigh, the Mariners now boast two players with 35+ homers, a feat only matched by the 1961 Yankees before August. While Suárez’s glove has dipped this season, his bat and clubhouse energy are expected to elevate a team tied for the AL’s final Wild Card spot.

“I think it’s coming home for Geno,” said Mariners manager Dan Wilson. Shortstop J.P. Crawford added, “Real thrilled to bring the ‘Good Vibes’ back.” Suárez is set to join the team for a pivotal series against the Rangers starting Thursday at T-Mobile Park, as Seattle aims to solidify its postseason hopes.
