In that outing, the oldest active player in MLB pitched five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. Despite his experience and a 4-4 record with a 5.36 ERA in nine starts at Omaha, the Royals opted to part ways, likely seeking flexibility in their rotation. Hill, who signed a minor-league deal in May, now faces an uncertain future, with the possibility of being traded, claimed off waivers, or remaining with the organization as a depth option.
Thomas Hatch, 30, returns to the majors after a brief stint earlier this season. Signed to a minor-league contract over the winter, Hatch was added to the 40-man roster in June but was designated for assignment without pitching. His quick recall suggests the Royals value his potential as a reliever or spot starter, especially with injuries impacting their rotation, including Michael Lorenzen’s oblique strain. Hatch’s minor-league performance this year has been unremarkable, but his prior MLB experience with the Toronto Blue Jays (2020-21) offers hope for contributions in a bullpen role.
