The Kansas City Royals have solidified their pitching rotation by signing right-hander Seth Lugo to a two-year, $46 million contract extension, ensuring the veteran starter remains in Kansas City through at least 2027. The deal, finalized on July 28, 2025, includes a vesting option for 2028 that could push the total value to $63 million if performance incentives are met, such as Lugo pitching 335 innings combined in 2026 and 2027 or 190 innings in 2027 alone. The agreement also features a $3 million signing bonus, with Lugo earning $20 million annually in 2026 and 2027.

Lugo, 35, has been a cornerstone of the Royals’ rotation since joining as a free agent in 2023. With a 2.98 ERA across 52 starts in 2024 and 2025, he holds the best ERA in franchise history among pitchers with at least 50 starts. His 2024 season was particularly standout, earning him an All-Star nod and a second-place finish in AL Cy Young Award voting. This year, Lugo has continued to shine, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA in 19 starts.

The extension quashes trade rumors that had swirled around Lugo ahead of the July 2025 trade deadline. Despite interest from teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, the Royals opted to lock in their ace, signaling a commitment to compete in 2025 and beyond. General Manager J.J. Picollo emphasized Lugo’s value both on the mound and in the clubhouse, noting his strong connection with the team and pitching coach Brian Sweeney.

With the Royals at 52-54 and four games back of an AL Wild Card spot, the extension underscores their belief in the current roster. Lugo’s presence provides stability to a rotation dealing with injuries to starters Cole Ragans, Michael Lorenzen, and Kris Bubic.
