Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the Emmy-nominated actor best known for his role as Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on the iconic sitcom The Cosby Show, has tragically passed away at the age of 54.
According to multiple reports, Warner died on July 20, 2025, following an accidental drowning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica.
Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as the charming and relatable Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show (1984–1992), a groundbreaking series that redefined portrayals of Black families on television. His performance earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and cemented his place in pop culture history. Warner’s career spanned over three decades, with notable roles in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, The Resident, and Sons of Anarchy, showcasing his versatility across comedy and drama.
Beyond acting, Warner was a multifaceted artist. He won a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jesus Children” alongside Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway. A skilled bass guitarist and poet, he performed at jazz festivals and the National Black Theatre Festival. Most recently, Warner co-hosted the podcast Not All Hood, where he explored themes of Black identity and masculinity, with the latest episode released just days before his passing.
