White Castle Celebrates 100 Years in St. Louis

On July 15, 1925, St. Louis welcomed a new kind of dining experience when White Castle, America’s first fast-food hamburger chain, opened its doors at 30 South 18th Street, just across from Union Station. This marked the chain’s first expansion eastward from its founding city of Wichita, Kansas, in 1921, and the beginning of a 100-year love affair with the Gateway to the West. A century later, White Castle remains a beloved fixture in St. Louis, still family-owned, still serving its iconic sliders, and still fostering a passionate community of “Cravers.”

A Historic Milestone

White Castle’s arrival in St. Louis was a pivotal moment for the brand. As the first city to embrace the chain outside its Kansas roots, St. Louis helped shape White Castle’s identity and growth into a national icon. The original location at 18th and Olive Streets introduced St. Louisans to the “Original Slider,” a small, square, steam-grilled burger topped with onions and a pickle, served on a soft bun. Priced at just five cents in its early days, the slider was an instant hit, earning its name for how easily it “slid” down with every bite.

“St. Louis was the first city we expanded to after our founding in 1921, and it’s held a special place in our hearts ever since,” said Lisa Ingram, CEO of White Castle and a fourth-generation family member. “For 100 years, Cravers in The Lou have embraced White Castle as their own, helping shape our culture, our menu, and our story.”

The St. Louis Castle Mix and “The Lou” Combo

St. Louis didn’t just adopt White Castle—it added its own flavor. For years, local customers have mixed half Coca-Cola Classic and half Hi-C Orange to create a beloved custom beverage known as the “St. Louis Castle Mix.” In celebration of the centennial, White Castle made this drink an official selection on Coca-Cola Freestyle machines at St. Louis-area locations, starting June 30, 2025, and running through September 7. This regional exclusive is a testament to the city’s influence on the chain’s menu.

To further honor St. Louis, White Castle introduced “The Lou” combo, a limited-time meal celebrating the city’s unique “Crave culture.” Available from June 30 to September 7, 2025, the combo includes:

  • Original Sliders, the classic 100% beef patties steam-grilled on a bed of onions.

  • Cheese Fries, a St. Louis favorite.

  • Gooey Butter Cake Dessert-on-a-Stick, a nod to the city’s celebrated dessert.

  • St. Louis Castle Mix, the iconic half-Coke, half-orange soda blend.

Members of White Castle’s Craver Nation Rewards™ program who order “The Lou” combo also unlock a limited-edition badge and a $2 reward toward a future purchase, adding to the festive spirit.

Centennial Celebrations and Community Gratitude

To mark the 100-year milestone, White Castle rolled out special promotions from July 13 to July 19, 2025. Every 100th customer at St. Louis-area locations, whether dining in or using the drive-thru, received their order free (excluding online or delivery orders). This gesture was part of White Castle’s heartfelt “Thank You” to the generations of St. Louisans who have made the chain a local institution.

“We’re beyond grateful for the love, loyalty, and imagination of our St. Louis Cravers,” said Darrin Cotton, regional director at White Castle. “This community helped White Castle grow into an iconic national brand, and we can’t wait to serve up the next 100 years of memorable moments in The Lou—one Slider at a time.”

The celebrations also highlighted White Castle’s deep ties to the city. From hosting nostalgic Valentine’s Day dinners with festive decorations and tableside service to serving as a late-night haven (many locations are open 24/7), White Castle has woven itself into St. Louis’s cultural fabric. Local reviews praise the chain for its consistency, with fans reminiscing about childhood visits and the unmatched taste of fresh sliders compared to the frozen versions available in grocery stores.

A Legacy of Innovation and Loyalty

White Castle’s 100 years in St. Louis reflect its broader legacy as a pioneer in fast food. Founded in 1921, the chain introduced the concept of the hamburger chain and standardized food preparation, paving the way for the modern fast-food industry. Its sliders, named “The Most Influential Burger of All Time” by Time magazine in 2014, remain a cultural touchstone. The company’s commitment to quality is evident in its ownership of meat processing plants, bakeries, and frozen-food facilities, ensuring consistency across its approximately 340 locations, including 16 in the St. Louis area available for delivery via Uber Eats.

The chain’s loyalty program, Craver Nation Rewards™, and its annual Cravers Hall of Fame inductions underscore the devotion of its fans, many of whom in St. Louis have made White Castle a multi-generational tradition. The company also prides itself on employee loyalty, with over 25% of its team members staying for at least a decade.

Looking Ahead

As White Castle looks to the next century in St. Louis, it remains committed to its roots while embracing innovation. The introduction of automated cooking robots like Flippy 2 in some locations and the expansion of plant-based options like the Impossible™ Slider (named Thrillist’s “Best Plant-Based Fast-Food Burger” in 2019) show the chain’s ability to evolve while staying true to its slider heritage.

For St. Louisans, White Castle is more than a restaurant—it’s a place where memories are made, from late-night cravings to Valentine’s Day traditions. As one Tripadvisor reviewer put it, “When I visit my hometown St. Louis, I have to make a stop at White Castle just to bring back the memories of my youth.” With its centennial celebrations, exclusive deals, and unwavering community spirit, White Castle continues to prove that “The Crave Is A Powerful Thing®.”
