St. Louis Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera is set to start his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds tonight,  as he works his way back from a strained left hamstring. The 24-year-old Panamanian, known for his offensive prowess, is expected to play a key role in bolstering the Cardinals’ lineup upon his return.

Herrera has been sidelined since late June due to the hamstring injury but recently demonstrated his readiness by running the bases at full speed over the weekend. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Herrera is slated to begin his rehab stint with Memphis either Thursday or Friday, with tonight marking the start. The Cardinals anticipate activating him from the 10-day injured list shortly after the All-Star break, provided there are no setbacks.

Before his injury, Herrera was a standout performer, slashing .320/.392/.533/.925 with 8 home runs and 36 RBI over 171 major-league plate appearances. His versatility as both a catcher and designated hitter makes him a valuable asset. During his rehab assignment, Herrera is expected to serve as DH for the next four days with Memphis.

Cardinals Manager Oliver Marmol said that Herrera playing catcher will be limited in the second half of the season due to two injuries to the same leg.

Herrera’s return could provide a significant boost to a Cardinals offense that has been lacking lately.
