Rafael Devers’ No-Show with Will Clark Raises Eyebrows

Rafael Devers, recently traded from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants, has sparked controversy by skipping three scheduled workouts with Giants legend Will Clark. The sessions, meant to help Devers transition to first base—a position he’s never played—took place during a series against Boston at Oracle Park.

Red Sox broadcaster Will Flemming reported that Devers failed to show up for workouts with Clark on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Clark, a Gold Glove-winning first baseman, confirmed the account, noting Devers didn’t even hit on the field. Clark suggested Devers avoided the sessions to dodge media scrutiny from Boston, given his recent tensions with the Red Sox over a refused positional switch. However, Clark warned, “Rafael Devers, the next time I’m in San Francisco, your ass will be on the field at first base, just letting you know that. Even if I gotta go grab you by the fucking back of the neck and drag your ass out there, you will be at first base.”

Devers, traded in June 2025 for pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs III, and rookie Jose Bello, has struggled to adapt. He’s batting .240/.348/.387 with two homers in 20 games as the Giants’ DH, with no appearances at first base. His $313.5 million contract and slow start have heightened scrutiny, especially as the Giants (50-42) vie for a playoff spot.

Boston media and fans view the no-show as validation of Devers’ reported attitude issues, while Giants fans worry about his commitment. Clark’s ultimatum suggests a chance for Devers to make amends, but his integration at first base remains uncertain.
