Kevin “Kev” Riddles, a pivotal figure in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), passed away peacefully in the hospital on July 4, 2025, at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer. As the founding bassist of Tytan and an original member of Angel Witch, Riddles left an indelible mark on the heavy metal scene.

Born on December 26, 1956, Riddles was a key contributor to Angel Witch from 1978 to 1981, playing on their seminal self-titled debut album and the Sweet Danger EP. His work helped define the NWOBHM sound, blending raw energy with intricate musicianship. After leaving Angel Witch in 1982, Riddles formed Tytan, further cementing his legacy in the genre. In recent years, he performed with Kev Riddles’ Baphomet, revisiting his Angel Witch classics with the blessing of band leader Kevin Heybourne.

Heybourne, the sole remaining founding member of Angel Witch, shared his grief in a social media post, saying, “Kevin was a great guy and we remained mates until the end. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to his wife Julie. Rest in peace Kev.” Tributes from fans and peers on X echoed this sentiment, with many calling Riddles a “true legend” and a “lovely South London hooligan” whose passion for music inspired countless others.

Riddles’ performances, including Tytan’s shows in Tokyo and London, were celebrated for their intensity and authenticity. His larger-than-life personality and dedication to heavy metal made him a beloved figure. He is survived by his wife, Julie, and a legacy that continues to resonate in the metal community.
