In a thrilling comeback at Wrigley Field, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-6 on July 5, 2025, snapping a four-game losing streak. The game saw a dramatic five-run eighth inning for the Cardinals, highlighted by a pinch-hit three-run homer from Yohel Pozo that soared onto Waveland Avenue, securing an 8-5 lead.

The Cubs had built a 5-3 advantage by the seventh inning, powered by home runs from Michael Busch and Carson Kelly, who both went deep for the second consecutive day. Busch, continuing his hot streak, also doubled and singled, finishing with a seven-game hit streak. However, the Cardinals mounted their rally in the eighth, starting with a solo homer from Alec Burleson, who collected three hits in the game. Nolan Gorman contributed an RBI single and a home run, while Thomas Saggese, a late replacement for Nolan Arenado at third, added two hits and two RBIs.

St. Louis starter Matthew Liberatore pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Steven Matz earned the win with five outs in relief, and Ryan Helsley closed out the game with a perfect ninth for his 17th save. For the Cubs, Drew Pomeranz struggled in his opener role, yielding two earned runs in just one out, ballooning his ERA from 0.00 to 0.76. Brad Keller took the loss, charged with five runs in the eighth.

The Cardinals’ resilience was evident after being outscored 11-3 the previous day, where the Cubs set a franchise record with eight home runs. This victory kept St. Louis competitive in the NL Central race, setting the stage for a crucial series finale with Erick Fedde facing off against Chicago’s Matthew Boyd.
