Lindenwood University has officially completed its NCAA reclassification process, earning full Division I membership status effective August 1, 2025—a year ahead of schedule. This monumental achievement, confirmed by a vote from the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, marks a new era for the Lions, who are now eligible to compete in NCAA-sponsored postseason events and championships.

The path to Division I status was no small feat. Over the past three years, Lindenwood demonstrated unwavering commitment to meeting the NCAA’s rigorous requirements. This included completing an academic review, satisfying Division I core guarantees, conducting an NCAA self-study program, and meeting enhanced financial aid criteria, such as offering scholarships exceeding the 10th percentile of active Division I members.

“Lindenwood approached the NCAA reclassification process with great intention and care,” said Jason Coomer, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. “Achieving full Division I status elevates the experience of our student-athletes and instills a deep sense of pride across our campus, alumni, supporters, and the St. Charles community. Our focus now shifts to winning championships and raising banners that will define this new era.”

Lindenwood’s early completion of the reclassification process places it among a select group of universities to achieve this milestone ahead of schedule. The university opted for an expedited process in January, meeting enhanced criteria to exit the reclassification phase a year early. This allows all Lindenwood teams to compete for NCAA Championships in the 2025-26 academic year.

“Achieving full NCAA Division I status marks a historic milestone for Lindenwood University,” said President Dr. John Porter. “This accomplishment reflects the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and entire campus. Competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics will continue to elevate our university’s profile and foster pride within the community.”

Lindenwood has already proven its competitive edge in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). In Fall 2024, the women’s soccer and volleyball programs claimed OVC Tournament Championships, setting the stage for their NCAA postseason eligibility. Autum Bax, a member of the 2024 OVC Champion women’s volleyball team, shared her excitement: “This opportunity means everything—not just for me, but for our entire program. Lindenwood has been building something bigger than itself for years, and now we can finally put it to the test on the biggest stage.”

The Ohio Valley Conference also celebrated Lindenwood’s achievement. “We commend Lindenwood for the vision, determination, and hard work they have demonstrated,” said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche. “They have shown a commitment to excellence on and off the field, and we are excited to see them compete in NCAA postseason events.”

Coomer emphasized the collective effort behind this success: “This accomplishment is the result of a campus-wide effort, with countless individuals working behind the scenes. Today is a celebration of their dedication, vision, and belief in what Lindenwood can achieve.”
