On Tuesday night at Rate Field, a baseball game took a disturbing turn when a 22-year-old fan was ejected for hurling derogatory comments at Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. The remarks targeted Marte’s late mother, Elpidia Valdez, who tragically lost her life in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. The incident left Marte visibly emotional, fighting back tears on the field during a seventh-inning pitching change.
The Chicago White Sox, along with reports from multiple outlets, confirmed that the fan has been banned indefinitely from attending games at all 30 MLB ballparks. According to a White Sox spokesperson, the fan expressed remorse after the incident, admitting their comments were “very inappropriate and stupid.”
Arizona’s manager, Torey Lovullo, didn’t hold back when addressing the situation. He described having a brief interaction with the fan, who came across as “pompous” and unapologetic at the time. “It was just a gross comment you wouldn’t say about anybody, let alone someone who lost their mom,” Lovullo said. He explained that he noticed Marte sobbing during the pitching change and reacted “as a dad would” to support his player. Arizona’s coaching staff, including bench coach Jeff Banister, quickly intervened, requesting the fan’s removal from the stadium.
Marte, who was consoled by teammates after the taunts disrupted his at-bat, chose not to comment on the incident after the game. The emotional toll was clear, and the incident has sparked conversations about fan behavior and the boundaries of sportsmanship.
