“I love Lobo. I always thought he was a great character to adapt. I think he’s maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film. So I think it was a cool thing to do.” – James Gunn

Get ready for a wild ride across the cosmos as the infamous alien mercenary Lobo crashes into the DC Universe. Warner Bros. and DC Studios are bringing the ruthless bounty hunter to life in the upcoming film Supergirl, set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. Portrayed by Jason Momoa, a familiar face from his days as Aquaman, Lobo is poised to shake up the DC cinematic landscape in a big way.

While details about Lobo’s role remain under wraps, DC Studios co-CEO and Supergirl producer James Gunn recently shared some insight into how the character fits into the story. Speaking on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gunn explained that Lobo’s comic book adventures are a collection of short, standalone tales. To adapt him for the big screen, the team crafted a cohesive, three-act narrative. “Lobo helps us create one throughline,” Gunn said, hinting at the character’s pivotal role in tying the film’s plot together.

In the comics, Lobo is a larger-than-life figure from the planet Czarnia, known for his blood-red eyes, biker aesthetic, and brutal approach to bounty hunting. He’s often crossed paths with Supergirl, making him a natural fit for her cinematic debut. Gunn didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for the character, calling Lobo “maybe the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film.” For fans who’ve long awaited his live-action debut, this is a thrilling moment.

Supergirl, previously known as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is a key part of the DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” This ambitious first wave kicks off with Superman on July 11, 2025, and continues with Supergirl, which follows Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock), Superman’s cousin, on a galactic quest for vengeance. Her mission is sparked by a death caused by Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), and the film promises an epic journey across the stars. The cast also includes David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Eve Ridley, adding depth to this cosmic tale.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, known for the acclaimed I, Tonya, Supergirl is based on a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, who’s also penning a Teen Titans film. Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran are producing, ensuring the film aligns with their bold vision for the rebooted DC Universe.

While Lobo’s future beyond Supergirl is uncertain, his debut has fans buzzing about the possibility of a solo film. Momoa, no stranger to leading DC projects, could easily slip into the role of the chain-wielding antihero for a standalone adventure. For now, though, all eyes are on Supergirl to see how this iconic bounty hunter leaves his mark.

Mark your calendars: the DC Universe launches with Superman on July 11, 2025, followed by Supergirl on June 26, 2026. Lobo’s ready to hunt—will you be there to witness his chaos?
