Yadier Molina, one of the greatest catchers in the game’s history, is back to manage Team Puerto Rico for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC). The announcement, made by the team on Wednesday, confirms that Molina will take the helm for his second consecutive WBC, following a strong showing in 2023 where he guided Puerto Rico to the quarterfinals.
Molina’s credentials speak for themselves. A 10-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, he’s widely regarded as one of the best defensive catchers ever. His experience in the WBC is unmatched, having competed in the tournament’s first five editions, four as a player. He was a key figure in Puerto Rico’s impressive runs as runners-up in 2013 (to the Dominican Republic) and 2017 (to the United States). Now, as manager, Molina brings that same passion and leadership to the dugout.
The 2026 WBC kicks off on March 5, with Team Puerto Rico—currently ranked No. 9 in the world—facing Canada in their opening game on March 6. They’ll compete in Pool A alongside Colombia, Cuba, and Panama, with all games hosted at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The home crowd is sure to bring electric energy to the tournament.
Adding to the excitement, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor will return as team captain, a role he also held in 2023. With Molina’s strategic brilliance and Lindor’s on-field leadership, Puerto Rico is poised to make waves in the global competition.
