Making good on their fall tour that had to be rescheduled, Tank and the Bangas kicked off the second half of their make-up The Heart, The Mind, The Soul USA tour in St. Louis Wednesday night at Delmar Hall. This New Orleans-based band got their jump start to fame by winning the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Concert contest. They most recently won their first Grammy for the 2024 album, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.
Performing to a packed crowd, the band members, all dressed in red with a fun, flapper-inspired dress for lead vocalist, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, who told the crowd, “we’ve got a fun one for you tonight” and slid into the soulful “Intro.” They then went to town with the powerful, spoken-word/rap of “Quick,” and transitioned to a new version of “A Poem Is” from The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, which included a few squeaks and joyful noises emanating from Tank.
The night remained joyous and affirming, bringing a much-needed release for many in the crowd.
New Orleans-based Felipe Zeus Perrier, aka DJ Zeus, warmed up the growing crowd with his 45-minute masterful set that included blending of dance beats and overlaying classics such as Lou Rawls’ “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” while adding an echoing reverb at appropriate times.
A night of Tank and the Bangas in concert makes the world right, so be sure to find them performing and plan on seeing them live and in person when you can.
