After amassing over 2.5M Spotify streams on his first 3 Chet Baker remixes and gaining over 80,000 new Instagram followers from aviral Hotel Cafe performance, Ornithology returns with a new official remix from the late jazz icon, entitled “Milestones,” with Roger Rosenberg on the saxophone, out today via Nettwerk, Ornithology teams up with good friend and fellow producer Hubie to rework the recovered 1978 jazz recording, lofi-style.
Ornithology is the moniker of 22-year-old wunderkind Shaan Chhadva (aka SCayos), a vocalist, producer, multi-instrumentalist and composer who makes music under five different aliases. Born and raised in Mumbai, Shaan came to the US as a teenager to attend Berklee College, and relocated to LA after graduating. His creativity has always pulled him in many different directions, hence the many monikers. Across aliases, Shaan’s catalog has accumulated over 250M total streams, and he has collaborated with the likes of Relyae, Souly Had, Dev Raiyani and dyl dion.
Recently, Shaan’s Ornithology alias got the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to officially remix a collection of songs from the late jazz icon Chet Baker. Each track is taken from Baker’s project Love For Sale – Live at The Rising Sun Celebrity Club, recorded in 1978 in Montreal, a decade before his death. Tragically, the beloved jazz club burnt down in 1990, destroying dozens of priceless recordings, but by some miracle, this record was found stored in an old defunct freezer amid the ruins and was eventually released via Justin Time Records. Years later, the project was shared with Shaan to remix, who was thrilled.
“I studied Chet Baker a bunch in high school,” Shaan shared in an Instagram Reel, “We had a jazz history class focusing on jazz legends and Chet was one of the artists I really fell in love with [be]cause he pioneered the “cool jazz” space… To be able to stand on the shoulders of a legend [with these remixes] is pretty cool.”
Toward the end of 2024, Shaan performed the first three remixes—”Oh, You Crazy Moon,” “Snowbound,“and “Love for Sale”—at Hotel Cafe with a band, which marked his first-ever live performance (listen to the live versions HERE). In January, Shaan uploaded clips from the performance to Instagram and they caught fire (over 7M views across 9 clips). Fans have flocked to the band’s “psychedelic jazz” sound, leading to Shaan booking another Ornithology show at Hotel Cafe for Feb 22 (more info HERE).
While Baker is no longer with us, Shaan was able to share his “Milestones” remix with Roger Rosenberg, now 72, who enjoyed it so much that he’s agreed to help develop a music video for the new version, 47 years after playing sax on the original track. Rosenberg has played with legends such as Quincy Jones, Miles Davis and Tito Puente, and is currently a touring member of Steely Dan. More details on the video to follow.
