San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall was electric on Friday the 13th, as Bay Area thrash metal legends Death Angel delivered their 9th Annual Another Death Angel Xmas Show. A sold-out crowd packed the iconic venue, proving once again why this holiday tradition has become a must-attend event for metalheads far and wide.

Death Angel’s sound is a feral force of nature—unrelenting, precise, and fiercely dynamic. Emerging from the Bay Area’s thrash metal crucible, the band masterfully fuses blistering riffs with intricate compositions and rhythms that hit like a coiled serpent. Their music doesn’t just rage; it breathes, seamlessly weaving raw, unhinged aggression with haunting melodic interludes that linger long after the final note. Mark Osegueda’s gritty yet soaring vocals cut through the chaos like a blade, redefining what thrash metal can be: visceral, thought-provoking, and unapologetically alive.

The last time I caught Death Angel live was over a decade ago at The Mateel Community Center in Redway. Seeing them again reminded me why I fell in love with this band in the first place. Their stage presence is magnetic, their charisma undeniable, and their technical prowess unparalleled. On Friday night, they kicked off their set with the fiery “5 Steps of Freedom,” immediately commanding the stage with ferocious energy. From start to finish, the setlist was an unrelenting barrage of bangers, each track feeding the insatiable energy of the crowd.Looking across the floor, it was impossible to find anyone standing idle. Fans were fully immersed, either headbanging, grooving, or diving into the ever-evolving mosh pits. Death Angel’s ability to connect with their audience remains unmatched, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and chaos in equal measure.

Each member of Death Angel brought their A-game, making this performance a masterclass in thrash. Mark Osegueda’s vocal range is nothing short of extraordinary, delivering fierce growls and soaring melodies with ease. Guitarists Ted Aguilar and Rob Cavestany were an unstoppable force, trading blistering riffs and intricate solos that left the crowd in awe. Damien Sisson’s bass thundered through the venue, providing a groove-laden backbone, while Will Carroll’s drumming was a relentless assault that kept the energy at its peak. Together, this lineup is a thrash metal juggernaut that demands to be experienced live.
Adding to the night’s festive spirit, Santa Claus made a surprise appearance during the set. The band’s rendition of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” had the crowd cheering, blending thrash with holiday cheer in true Death Angel style. They even raffled off a piece of their history—Ted’s moth-themed battle jacket from The Evil Divide tour—to one lucky fan, making the night even more memorable.Death Angel also paid homage to their musical roots with a thunderous cover of The Beatles’ “Any Time At All,” a nod to the legendary band that inspired this Christmas show tradition. The crowd roared their approval, embracing the blend of thrash and classic rock that only Death Angel could deliver.

The night ended on a high note with a searing performance of “Thrashers” from their iconic album The Ultra-Violence. The crowd erupted into chaos, with circle pits, crowd surfers, and unbridled thrashing taking over the venue. True to their reputation, Death Angel proved to be not just performers, but gracious hosts, thanking the audience for sharing another unforgettable Xmas show with them.
As the final notes faded and the lights dimmed, whispers filled the air about next year’s milestone—the 10th Annual Another Death Angel Xmas Show. If this year’s event is any indication, fans can expect something even bigger and better. Until then, the storm of Death Angel’s music will keep raging in the hearts of those lucky enough to witness it live.

Hey, I’m Edgar. As a former traveling musician, I know firsthand the energy and connection that live performances create. That experience shapes how I approach concert photography—I aim to compose shots that reflect the larger-than-life feeling of being on stage, capturing the atmosphere and emotion that make each moment unforgettable.

I also bring my passion for portrait photography into my work. I’ve spent years chasing the light to capture the essence of every individual I photograph, immortalizing their story in a single frame. Whether it’s the raw energy of a live show or the quiet power of a portrait, my goal is to create images that resonate.

Based in Northern California, I’d love to collaborate with musicians, artists, and anyone looking to create something timeless. Follow my work on Instagram at @e.castro.photography, and let’s make something unforgettable together.
