The Urge’s annual Thanksgiving show returned to The Pageant in St. Louis on November 29th, 2024. As always, the venue was packed with local devoted fans ready to kick off the holiday season with their signature high-octane rock and ska-infused sounds.
The night started with an impressive set from The Breakdowwns, who took the stage at 7:30 pm. This STL-based psychedelic blues rock band performed their new single “Talking to Myself” along with a handful of covers and originals off their upcoming debut album “THE BREAKDOWWNS” releasing January 1st, 2025. Heads were banging and feet were tapping for the entirety of the opening performance.
Next up, Playadors brought a fresh wave of excitement to the stage at 8:25 pm. Their set was a high-energy mix of ska and punk, and they didn’t hold back, delivering infectious rhythms and energetic riffs that had the crowd moving. Dave Grelle, bandleader, keyboardist, and St. Louis native, first took the stage to introduce a slew of local talented musicians and vocalists. The band’s horn section added that distinctive ska flavor that kept the energy levels high.
Finally, it was time for The Urge, and at 9:30 pm., the crowd’s anticipation was palpable. As soon as the lights dimmed, the chant began: “Play that motherf**in’ Urge s**t!” Ewing’s infectious stage presence made it clear he was in his element. The band’s dynamic performance of high-speed punk, ska, and rock fusion was energizing, with Ewing sprinting in circles during the intro song “The Boot Will Conquer the Sandal.”
The band was tight, with each member feeding off the others’ energy, creating an atmosphere of unrelenting excitement. The crowd was a mix of fans of all ages, including plenty of kids rocking Urge merch alongside their parents, passing the torch of fandom from one generation to the next.
The setlist was a perfect blend of fan favorites and deep cuts, ensuring that longtime followers were more than satisfied. The crowd erupted into applause for tracks like “Open All Night” and “Brainless”— the nostalgia was real. A majority of the setlist consisted primarily of songs from their studio albums “Receiving the Gift of Flavor” (1995), “Master of Styles” (1998), and “Too Much Stereo” (2000). As the night drew to a close, the crowd still chanting, the band delivered an energetic encore of songs including a cover of “Walking on the Moon” by The Police, “How Does It Feel”, “Dirty Rat”, and “It’s Gettin’ Hectic”.
The Urge, St. Louis’ reigning rock kings, delivered an unforgettable Thanksgiving tradition for their dedicated fans. With their trademark mix of raw energy, audience interaction, and powerhouse performances, The Urge’s annual Thanksgiving show at The Pageant is not just a concert—it’s a celebration.
