St. Lucia, the acclaimed alt-pop project led by husband-and-wife duo, Jean-Philip Grobler and Patti Beranek, are thrilled to announce their highly anticipated fifth studio album, Fata Morgana: Dawn, set for release on March 14, 2025 via Nettwerk. To herald the album’s arrival, today the band is sharing their mesmerizing new single, “Pie In The Sky.”
“Pie In The Sky” is a soaring, orchestral pop anthem that showcases St. Lucia’s signature blend of lush melodies and driving rhythms. Born out of a live band session in early 2020, “Pie In The Sky” embodies a sense of growth and transformation. Paired with optimistic lyrics and anthemic choruses, St. Lucia invites listeners to embrace the possibilities and dream big. Jean-Philip Grobler shares this about “Pie In The Sky,” “It goes without saying that we are very proud of releasing this song. It takes a pretty long time for us to finish a piece of music and a lot of investment of energy and time and re-recording this and re-mixing that and so when it’s finally done, it’s really done. So here it is, and I have to say I do think it’s a pretty glorious piece of work (even if I do say so myself). Many of my favorite songs and pieces of music have an element of the feeling of the gates of heaven opening, like you’re entering a new and fantastical world full of hope, possibility and also danger, and I have to say I think that this song has that quality. We truly didn’t hold anything back in this song, I was aspiring to the levels reached by artists like ELO, Abba, David Bowie, and Kate Bush, and in many ways I borrowed (not intentionally, just subconsciously) from that 1970’s orchestral-pop world. We have strings, Aly & AJ doing backup vocals like a choir of angels, Mark Foster (of Foster The People) playing the tubular bells like some distant god, of course the core St. Lucia band of Dustin Kaufman, Patti Beranek, Nicky Paul and Ross Clark playing live in the room together…the whole thing just feels like an epic journey. We’ve always aimed for epic, but I’m not sure we’ve ever reached this level of epicness. Anyway, I just sound like I’m blowing smoke up my own ass now so go take a listen to make sure I’m not just a deluded fool.”
Inspired by the work of Alejandro Jodorowski, Salvador Dali, Pina Bausch as well as films like The Colour of Pomegranates and The Fall, the accompanying music video for “Pie In The Sky” is a visually stunning exploration of surreal landscapes and dreamlike imagery. Filmed in South Africa and made alongside dear friend and collaborator Xander Ferreira, as well as AI artist Pierre Zandrowicz, Andrew Francis & Daniel Morris of Gabha Studios and editor Oli Chen, the video merges the real and digital worlds, creating a captivating and otherworldly experience. “Pie In The Sky” follows the band’s two previous 2024 singles, “Fear Of Falling” and “Falling Asleep,” both off the forthcoming album. “Fear of Falling” is a poignant reflection on life’s journey, inspired by the birth of Grobler’s first son. The song captures a sense of awe, wonder, and the fleeting nature of time. Inspired by the likes of David Bowie, Electric Light Orchestra, and the cinematic grandeur of Ennio Morricone, “Falling Asleep” transports listeners on a dreamy, spiritual quest. “Falling Asleep” is more than just a song; it’s an invitation to pause, reflect, and embrace the unconventional. Consequence hailed it as “A throwback, high-tempo disco anthem that initially sounds like Studio 54 after pounding a few 5-Hour Energy shots.” Mixed by Chris Zane (Jack Antonoff, Passion Pit, The Walkmen), Fata Morgana: Dawn, the fifth album from South-African born Jean-Philip Grobler’s long-running project with his Germany-born wife Patti Beranek, expands the band’s sound in massive and widescreen fashion—encompassing 1960s and 1970s psychedelic pop, the gritty pre-’80s dance music of the NYC punk-rock scene, the cinematic sweep of classic film scores, and much more. With its bold experimentation and emotional depth, Fata Morgana: Dawn is poised to captivate both longtime fans and new listeners alike. Fans can pre-save the album HERE.
