What a show! This concert photographer is so happy Misterwives put St. Louis on their Just For One Night month-long tour, especially after reading the news in August that they’re taking a break after it’s completed. The lighting popped, the sound was on point, and the on-stage interactions between members Mandy Lee, William Hehir, Marc Campbell, Etienne Bowler, and Mike Murphy were dynamic.
Held at The Hawthorn in downtown St. Louis, their hour-plus set was a whirlwind with Lee commanding the stage with a certain swagger while dancing, and tossing her fiery red hair all while belting out fan favorites such as the grungier “Organized Chaos,” the catchy “Trigger Pull,” and the poppy “Sideways.”
joan and Moody Joody opened for Misterwives.
Relative newcomers hailing from Nashville, the female-fronted Moody Joody kicked the night off with about 30 minutes of their new wave-inspired synths and bright guitar riffs. Songs included the vibrant “Cuts Deep,” and the well, dreamy “Dream Girl.” They joked at one point saying they were no strangers to St. Louis and asked the crowd where everyone went to high school and gave a shout-out to Imo’s pizza and toasted ravs.
Little Rock’s joan delighted the crowd with a sound rooted in ’80s synth-rock with a modern feel. Their catchy hooks and lyrics belong on numerous indie-film soundtracks. The duo, Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford (with supporting drummer), sang their hearts out during their powerful 30-minute set that included “loner,” “tokyo,” and the somber “i loved you first.”
The only downside to the night? That more people weren’t there to see this concert. We hope they’ll all be back for another “Trip Around the Sun” soon (and that Misterwives break is just a short-term breather).
