One sign of a good concert? Waking up the next morning and humming/singing songs performed the night before. And that’s just what happens after seeing The Struts in concert.
The lads from across the pond brought their Pretty Vicious tour to The Factory on July 27 to adoring fans (St. Louis garnering the number four spot on this coveted 28-day tour).
Peppering in songs from their November 2023 album, Pretty Vicious such as the hard-hitting “Do What You Want,” “Better Love,” and the title track, The Struts also sated fans with favorites including “Body Talks,” “Primadonna Like Me,” “Put Your Money On Me,” and ending the night on “Could Have Been Me.”
On this night, they had a little less glam and flair than several previous concerts this concert photographer has covered over the years but it did not diminish the experience Saturday night one iota. Perhaps that’s due to the band’s rather extensive touring for more than 10 years, or a slight change in sound as they grow, or perhaps it was just an off night. And maybe it was just me as the lighting was more shadowy with fewer front lights than in previous concerts making it harder to eke out decent photos (you can be the judge of that).
All in all, The Struts, comprised of lead vocalist Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies, continue to impress with their modern glam-rock style and sound and are worth every cent of that Pretty Vicious tour admission price.
Opener Barns Courtney’s dynamic stage presence and electric performance, complimented throughout by touring guitarist Andrew Berkeley Martin, is one the crowd won’t soon forget. The 33-year-old UK-based singer/songwriter/guitarist came on stage and unfurled his raw vocals and energy starting with the newly-released single, “National Treasure” and ending 40 minutes later with his anthemic bluesy-rock “Fire.”
The Struts and Barns Courtney are one of the hottest tickets during a summer ablaze with an overload of concerts. Get yours while you still can.
