Iwan Webster buried the clinching penalty kick and Patrick Schulte came up with a big save in the shootout to help top-seeded Saint Louis advance past No. 4 Fordham in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Championship on Friday at Hermann Stadium.
SLU (13-0-4) will face the winner of today’s other semifinal – No. 2 Rhode Island vs. No. 6 Duquesne – in the league’s championship game on Sunday at noon at Hermann Stadium.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw in regulation. The tie extended the Billikens’ unbeaten streak to 17 games.
Schulte came up big with a save in the second half to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.
In the shootout, Kevin Komodi, A.J. Palazzolo and Mujeeb Murana all made their attempts. Schulte made a save on a Fordham attempt, then the next Ram knocked one off the bar to set up Webster’s clinching attempt. The senior from Liverpool, England, calmly tucked it under the crossbar to clinch the Billikens’ ticket into their sixth A-10 final.
During game play, the Billikens outshot Fordham 12-3 and managed a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
