“A collection of immersive, spiritually aligned pieces”
CLASH Magazine“Through the calculation of probabilities, on the one hand they create random sounds and rhythms, and on the other hand they have full control of their ideas and the composition.”
Son Of Marketing
“The duo hold themselves in a state of gnawing discomfort, with electronic feedback showering over those rumbling polyrhythms, trying to puncture the membrane of civility that keeps the percussion within the realms of musical obedience, goading those tempered drum hits toward the booms and bangs of violence”
ATTN Magazine
Afrofuturism producers Trrmà released their album, The Earth’s Relief premiered via CLASH Magazine on the 1st of May via 577 Records. The duo have received support from Italian publications Data Transmission, Music Week, Son Of Marketing, VENTS Mag, Rockerilla and Blow Up. The two have toured Japan, sharing a stage with Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Koichi Makigami (Tzadik record), and Doravideo. Trrmà has also collaborated with American visual artist and pianist Charlemagne Palestine whilst one-half of Trrmà, Giovanni Todisco has previously worked with Italian punk duo ?Alos. Having toured Europe, the duo also played at L’homme a deux oreilles and Time Zones Festival.
Based in the South of Italy, specifically, the town of Bari (Puglia) and Messina, Sicily, Trrmà is comprised of Giovanni Todisco on drums and percussion and Giuseppe Candiano on modular synthesizers. Giovanni Todisco, a teacher of drums and percussion in several music schools, received his own formal training when he graduated from Monopoli Conservatory in “Classical Percussions”. Giuseppe Candiano studied jazz guitar and trumpet before he went on to teach himself the synthesizer with a focus on electronic music.
Trrmà find inspiration in the beginnings of afrofuturism with SUN RA taking centre stage while the more structured aspects of IANNIS XENAKIS providing support. The resulting sound is complex, with parallels being drawn to the likes of Clap! Clap! and Flying Lotus, while the jazzy aspects of Portico Quartet shine through.
Not being afraid to explore an underappreciated genre, Trrmà proudly present their full-length album. An extraordinary display of polyrhythmic percussion roars proudly throughout the album as the listener is enticed into the world of Afrofuturism. Influences of beat culture such as afrobeat and footwork can be found throughout The Earth’s Relief as scattershot snare drums are presented in every conceivable manner. As a result, multiple listenings of the album is encouraged so that the listener may pick up a new nuance of the album each time.
Speaking of the overall album, Trrmà tells us “”The Earth’s relief” is dedicated to unreachable peaks, at the same time it represents the desire to challenge the highest goals, a metaphor for the research behind our music with which we always try to surprise ourselves.”
