Acclaimed indie-pop duo Tennis is celebrating the popular and critical success of their extraordinary new album, SWIMMER, available now via Tennis’s own Mutually Detrimental label.
Produced by Tennis and mixed by four-time GRAMMY® Award-nominee Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At The Disco, Parquet Courts), SWIMMER sees the Denver, CO-based husband and wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore elevating their distinctive pop approach to heretofore unexplored new heights, experimenting with atypical instrumentation, complex time changes, and an increased focus on lyrical storytelling fueled in part by a series of life-changing experiences that only served to strengthen their already powerful personal and creative bond. As with their 2011 debut album, CAPE DORY, and their acclaimed fourth LP, 2017’s YOURS CONDITIONALLY, the new album was written largely on the sea, this time during a four-month sailing excursion in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico as well as Tennis’s own Denver, CO recording studio.
Released on Valentine’s Day, February 14, SWIMMER immediately proved among the most highly acclaimed collections of the year:
“SWIMMER is a distillation of everything Tennis do so well, and it further establishes them as a dynamic, sophisticated pop act worthy of even bigger stages… The production, handled at home by Tennis, is the best of the band’s career, with lush soundscapes, crisp percussion, and a persistently gripping low-end – together, these elements push the songs to fantastic heights. More than anything else in their discography, SWIMMER makes the case that Tennis are a band worthy of even larger audiences.”
“Though SWIMMER is a record based on a time of hardship, the album is by no means one of despair, but the tightening of a bond… Tennis has proved their unbreakable resiliency, and in the process, has given us what might be the best indie album of 2020.”
“Tennis’ most conceptually complete work to date… their music is for anyone who’s a romantic at heart.”
– PASTE
“Tennis has come back stronger than ever… Parts of SWIMMER may have been born of adversity, but (Tennis) come up shining in the end.”
“The duo’s ear for melody and juxtaposition of densely layered music with sparse instrumentation make SWIMMER a rewarding introspective album that feels like a heartfelt walk through ten years of marriage and making music.”
“As a band enters their second decade, it’s good to shake things up a little so people won’t take them for granted. Thanks to the life Tennis breathed into the album with their dedication and passion, SWIMMER should keep fans on their toes for sure.”
– AllMusic
“They’re five albums in and Tennis keep getting better and better.”
– MOJO

SWIMMER was first heralded last November by the release of Tennis’s first new music in almost three years, “Runner,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services. the track is joined by a colorful companion video, directed by longtime collaborator Luca Venter and inspired by Moore’s love of “old musicals and all things Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Bob Fosse.” “Runner” is streaming now via the official Tennis YouTube channel.
The second single, “Need Your Love,” arrived in January 2020 and is accompanied by an equally colorful companion video, once again directed by Venter.
