Rock ānā roll is such a broad, yet also distinctive term when it comes to describing music. Last night (Oct. 14) three hard-rocking bands performed to a nearly full house at The Pageant in St. Louis ā on a Monday night to boot. While Dirty Honey, Alter Bridge and Skillet each have their own recognizable sound, all three bands were all rock ānā roll all night long during this Victorious Sky tour.
Kicking off the powerful night of rock was Dirty Honey. Formed in 2017 in L.A., this yet-to-be-signed band has steamrolled its way to the number one spot on Billboard charts becoming the first unsigned band to do so with its hit “When I’m Gone,ā (which they performed). The mixture of influences that include Led Zeppelin, The Who, Guns ānā Roses has blended together to give this not-to-be-missed group an iconic, updated ā70s and ’80s rock vibe you will want to get to know. From the second the lights switched on stage, Dirty Honey captivated the early, already packed crowd (many of whom saw them at Pointfest in May) with a dynamic stage presence that included powerful songs such as āHeartbreakerā all the way through their short 30-minute set closing with āRolling 7s,ā a song to leave you feeling groovy all night long.
Since 2004, co-headliner Alter Bridge has brought mesmerizing power cords and heavy, driving drums and Monday night was no different. Their 65-minute set began with āWouldnāt You Rather,ā with Myles Kennedyās vocals shining through, from their newest album Walk the Sky to be released on October 18. The inclusion of laser lights bouncing off every wall and deep hues of blues engulfed the crowd, adding to the mystique. A tease of The Beatles āBlackbirdā was met with cheers, whistles, hoots, and howls as well-knowing fans knew that meant Alter Bridgeās own āBlackbirdā was up next.
Toward the end of their set, Kennedy introduced drummer Scott āFlipā Phillips who led with a solo prior to the band picking up and launching into āMetalingus.ā The group closed their night with the softer, 2004 hit āOpen Your Eyes.ā After a bow, the members tossed out setlists, guitar picks and drumsticks to a lucky few in the crowd.
Co-headliner, Skillet took to the stage just after 9:30 p.m. to a crowd still ready for more rock ānā roll and they got what they were waiting for. The intense energy of the band, especially lead singer John Cooper, consumed every inch of The Pageant. Theatrics included the nonstop Cooper, strapped with a cryo fog cannon and looking a bit cyborgesque, dousing the crowd during āYou Aināt Ready.ā Later, Cooper excitedly told the crowd that their latest single āLegendary,ā from their new album Victorious, is being used by the WWE. Since 1996, this Grammy-nominated hard rock-tinged with heavy metal band has been bringing the gospel with them everywhere they go. Skillet swept the crowd away with other hits including āUndefeatedā and āMonsterā ending the night with āThe Resistance.ā
Rock ānā roll is definitely here to stay in all its glorious formats.
