Four Saint Louis University student-athletes have received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, sponsored by media organization Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.

Senior Lauren Lomax and sophomores Alyssa Chavez and Sadie Wise of the SLU softball team, as well as sophomore Maya Taylor of the Billiken volleyball team, are recipients of the award, which honors diverse undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom and on the athletic field. Students also must have a commitment to service in the community and community activism.

Lomax is an elementary special education major with a 3.62 cumulative grade point average; Chavez is a psychology major with a 3.72 GPA; Wise is an occupational sciences major with a 3.71 GPA; and Taylor is a leadership and human resources management major with a 3.60 GPA.

The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award was inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education and love for the game of tennis. U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
