Kennys Chesney’s Trip Around the Sun tour rocked STL last night in Busch Stadium. So glad it didn’t feel like a trip around the sun though! It was a beautiful night and even though all the artists were drenched in sweat from the high energy they brought, we got lucky with temperatures for the middle of a summer in STL.
Brandon Lay started off the evening with a fun short set. He brought some of his more popular songs, “Yada Yada Yada” & “Speakers, Bleachers, Preachers”, and had a great energy he shared with the crowd. While the stadium was still filling he covered something familiar, 3 AM by Matchbox Twenty, and got the crowd even more excited for the night. Keep an eye on this fella who is spending the summer learning a lot, Brandon mentioned he felt like he was in “Tour College” with Kenny Chesney.
Next to take the stage was Old Dominion, a tight knit group that has played together for years. You can tell these guys have a blast together and really feed off of each other. Overheard a lady next to me say to her friend “These are some really cool lookin dudes”, and they really are! Well dressed, confident and fun to watch. The crowd had a blast singing along to hits like “Snapback” and “Break Up With Him”. Lead singer Matthew Ramsey did a great job of getting the crowd engaged when he talked about how it feels good to get stuff of your chest sometimes before playing new song “No Such Thing As A Broken Heart”. He also mentioned how they are most proud of their song “Written In The Sand”. Would love to see these guys play again someday!
Thomas Rhett and his group of great band members exploded onto the stage with the popular song “T-Shirt”, all sporting STL gear. The drummer in a Blues jersey, Saxophone player had a straw hat on with a Cardinals logo and Thomas Rhett in an Ozzie Smith Cardinals jersey. How cool?! Before playing “Get Me Some Of That”, Rhett talked about how Kenny Chesney told him STL is one of the loudest places he has ever played and he tested that by letting the crowd fill in on the chorus. My favorite part of this set however was when Rhett called out a guy in the front of the crowd who wasn’t very engaged. Pulled him up on stage and introduced Darrell to everyone in the crowd and told him “well you weren’t doing much dancing, so I figured you should do some singing” and then “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks was sung by Rhett and new pal Darrell.
The sun set, the bright ballpark lights shut off and the packed ballpark went wild, as soon as Kenny Chesney hit the stage with his song “Beer In Mexico”. Within the first few minutes of his set he was soaked in sweat and had already transported the crowd in Busch Stadium to the beach, which is easy to do with his chill island vibes. Easily enjoyable was the night, as he cast his positive vibes all over STL, pushing the crowd to turn negative energy into something positive and to give love the upper hand. “Get Along” promoted that feeling for sure. It was a night of no worries in STL! Hits like “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem”, “I Go Back” and “Summertime” could probably be heard for miles from the stadium. All three previous acts joined Kenny on stage at different times for a little extra fun added. Kenny made a return and finished the night off with “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” and the crowd returned from our “Trip Around The Sun”. It was an unforgettable night of country music at Busch Stadium in St. Louis!
