The Cardinals took their time with Alex Reyes coming back from Tommy John surgery, giving him 20 months to recuperate. It looked like it was going to pay off and that he would join the team’s rotation and make a huge impact after he dominated through all 4 of his rehab starts in the minor leagues.
As much as fans want to blame Matheny or the training staff, Reyes apparently hurt himself during the Memphis start but didn’t feel like it was anything abnormal and didn’t mention it to anybody. It wasn’t noticeable during his first start back in the majors until his velocity took a dip in the 4th inning. Even after the game he said he didn’t feel anything different than usual pains, just a little ‘fatigued.’ However, an MRI the next morning showed that he had a significant tear in his right lat issimus dorsi (lat) muscle. Same injury that Carlos Martinez had, but worse off.
Reyes went to Philadelphia to seek a second opinion yesterday which led to him having surgery earlier this afternoon reattach the tendon in his right lat. He is expected to miss the remainder of the 2018 season.
