Saint Louis sophomore defender Alli Klug has been selected the Atlantic 10 Conference women’s soccer co-Defensive Player of the Week for the period of Sept. 11-17. It is Klug’s first career A-10 weekly award.
Klug played all 90 minutes in both games last week as Saint Louis registered road victories over Evansville (3-1) and Murray State (1-0). She helped lead a back line that allowed just 11 total shots and five shots on goal in the two contests combined.
The shutout of previously undefeated/untied Murray State was the Billikens’ sixth clean sheet this season. Klug played a major role in limiting the Racers’ Harriet Withers – the national leader in shots on goal – to two shots, neither of which was on frame.
At least one Saint Louis student-athlete has collected an A-10 award in each of the first five weeks of the season. Seven different individuals have earned those weekly awards, and Billiken players have received at least one A-10 weekly honor in all three categories – Offensive, Defensive and Rookie.
Previous SLU recipients this season are Mary Niehaus (Sept. 11 co-Defensive Player of the Week), Annabelle Copeland (Sept. 11 co-Rookie of the Week), Megan Nixon (Sept. 5 co-Rookie of the Week), Maddie Pokorny (Aug. 28 Offensive Player of the Week), Evie Lavelle (Aug. 21 co-Offensive Player of the Week) and Olivia Petit (Aug. 21 Rookie of the Week).
The Billikens (8-0-1) are the first team in Saint Louis women’s soccer history to go unbeaten in nonconference play. SLU is one of just six undefeated teams in NCAA Division I women’s soccer, joining Tennessee, Texas, Milwaukee, UCLA and Rutgers.
The Billikens play their A-10 opener at home Thursday, Sept. 21, against St. Bonaventure. Game time at Robert R. Hermann Stadium is 7 p.m.
