Saint Louis baseball team scored 12 runs, all with two outs, to top the SIUE Cougars 12-3 in Edwardsville, Ill. Freshman RHP Zach Girrens (1-3) gets the first win of his collegiate career. The Billikens rise to 28-18 on the year.
Several Bills excelled at the plate in the contest. Danny Murphy went 3-5 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBIs. Alec Solé returned from injury to go 2-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a steal and the first home run of his career.Braxton Martinez was also 2-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a solo home run.
The Billikens threw three freshmen against the Cougars. Girrens threw 4.0 innings, with five hits with two runs against (both unearned) and three strikeouts. Sam Nafziger had 2.0 IP with a hit and two punch outs. Robert Plohr came in and hurled 2.0 IP, allowing one unearned run, walking two and striking out three.
As a team, the Billikens tallied 13 hits, seven of which went for extra bases, and drew five walks and two hit by pitch.
Saint Louis will host Fordham this weekend for the final home series of the season. Game one is scheduled for Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at the Billiken Sports Center. The following day, Saturday, May 10, the Saint Louis department of athletics will honor the 2014 senior class in a pre-game ceremony. Senior day festivities will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m.
