Saint Louis sophomore third baseman Braxton Martinez was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, the league announced today. It is Martinez’s first weekly honor of the season. He is the second Billiken to receive a weekly accolade this season.
Martinez powered the Billiken offense in the Wake Forest Tournament. Over the four games, he was 9-16 (.563 average) with three doubles. Martinez was a complete hitter, maintaining a team-best .750 slugging percentage and a team-leading .611 on-base percentage for a 1.361 OPS. In the first game against Saint Peter’s, he was 4-4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Martinez went 3-5 with two doubles and a run scored vs. Stony Brook.
Martinez and the Billikens will open the 2014 home slate on March 5 when they take on Murray State at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
