Darth Carp Returns… Again? Yes Please!

When I woke to this news, I just rolled over.  Being Star Wars Day and all… I figured I was just having another one of those typical Cardinal fan dreams. You know what I’m talking about.

Chris Carpenter is planning to make a return this year!  He has resumed a throwing program down at Busch Stadium after calling it quits just three months ago prior to spring training.

Could he be just what our bullpen needs? Of course, we can’t get our hopes up just yet, but his mere presence in the clubhouse would be a very welcome addition.   Mozeliak is optimistic:

“I’m candidly optimistic and excited about him contributing. We really haven’t focused on a timetable or anything. We’re merely letting him go out and see what he can do. If he clears one hurdle, he proceeds to the next.”

If Mozeliak is excited, it will be hard for fans not to be excited as well.

Carpenter remains on the team’s 60-day disabled list, and can not be activated sooner than the end of this month. Mozeliak thinks a projected return in late June or early July is reasonable.

It would require less conditioning for him to be in the bullpen than it would to work as a starter, and right now our rotation is very solid.  Carp said:

“I want to do what I can to help.”

Que the Darth Vader breathing sound, “Lord Carpenter…. Rise.”

May the 4th be with you!

Such exciting news! i wouldn’t be surprised to find out Carp had some robo arm attached to take the place of his human throwing arm.

I think Carp’s day as a starter are over. His TOS isn’t going away. But, pitching 15-25 pitches every 2-3 days might help him avoid the symptoms that shut him down the past 2 years. If he can still get bite on his slider, cutter & curve, he could be very useful from the bullpen for a couple years… alá John Smoltz
